My landlord is crazy and I'm afraid he'll give a bad referance to potential landlords! What can I do about it?

The landlord for the apartment I lived in before the place I live in now was crazy. No, I'm not making excuses for myself this guy scared me really bad. When we first moved in he was really nice and then he started acting like he was my father. He put up fences and locked security gates in after we moved in. This a small 8 unit apartment complex that was owned and managed by the same man. He asked us to tell him if we were going to have company. When my mother showed up out of the blue he was very rude to her and yelled at me. Also, my husband went outside to the car one night with no shoes on and the landlord told him he needed to get inside because it was too late to be out and that needed to wear shoes. Anyway, we only lived there about 5 months and moved as soon as we had the money. The land lord I have now is the best but he didn't check our references so I don't know what that previous landlord will say about us. What can he legally say? (California, USA)

I never call the landlord an applicant is presently renting from. It is unlikely I would get an honest answer. If they hate the tenant, they might tell me the applicant is the greatest tenant they've ever had. Of course, if they like the tenant they might talk them down hoping to keep them for themselves.

If you don't list that landlord on future applications, you will have a hole in your tenancy history, and this should cause a red flag for all landlords.

The best thing to do is list him, but in the reason for moving explain that he was abusive and harassing.
