security barrier Questions
Is the niqab a barrier between people in everyday interaction?
The niquab is the full covering, including the face veil. Muslim women who wear this cover their hair, their body and the face except for their eyes. It is still hotly debated whether the full niquab is required or just recommended.
It has been suggested that this is a barrier to communication and can pose serious security issues at places such as airports, where facial identification is necessary.
What do you think and why?
Do you think it is a right of a Muslim woman to wear the niquab if she chooses? Why/whay not?
I am especially interested in hearing the opinions of Muslim women on this subject.
If a woman wants to wear niqab then that is her right, much as it is mine not to wear it. However if she chooses to set herself aside in this manner be it a political or religious statement, then she should not be surprised if some people not of her faith find it difficult to comprehend, or to deal with the person behind the mask.
I personally find it difficult to deal with niqab wearers, because one cannot see their face, and therefore the small movements and gestures on a face that enable one to reach out to another, and to gain small messages of understanding from involuntary facial movements. We all do this, it is an innate skill, hampered by niqab. If the eyes alone are exposed, this is not enough for me to understand the person beneath - no,not that I can't hear them speak, or anything like that, they are just cut off. Their choice, but I don't see that I should have to make any additional efforts - if I were in KSA the situation would be reversed, but I am not, I am here, and I will look at and talk directly to a niqab wearer, and smile and so on, but I feel it is a barrier to understanding the person, and sets the niqabi apart - intentionally or unintentionally. Their choice.
I saw a niqabi with a bus pass getting really stroppy once when the bus driver asked to see her face - if she has a free bus pass, then she has to show her face to prove its her and she's entitled. Too bad.
Airport security - absolutely no discussion here, Show your face and stop making such a song and dance about it. No-one cares what you look like, what we need to see is that you are who you say you are. Given that certain terrorists have escaped through craven security people being too scared of being accused of being anti Muslim by asking to see faces I think niqabis have a DUTY to show their faces when required to do so, and I don't think there is any ruling to say they shouldn't.
