Unless you can afford a 'proper' CCTV camera you may have to be satisfied with a Web Cam .. problem here is that most Web Cams are really only intended to 'work' when you are sitting directly in front of them and in decent light ...

The 'low end' of the CCTV market (see link) are little more than web-cams with IR diodes .. they typically have very poor resolution - a 'proud boast' of 640 x 480 is actually only about 1/3rd mega pixel (just about OK to tell the difference between an intruder & a cat - and 600x800 is 'high end' (less than half a mega pixels) although if you are very lucky you might get 1024x768 (which is still less than 1 mega pixels)...

Even the cheapest 'normal' digital camera will have over 4 mega pixels = some of these have a USB cable operation mode .. this might allow a computer to control the taking of 'normal' pictures .. so I suggest you investigate that route .. (you will need one that takes an external power supply and can be configured not to turn itself off automatically) - a few high res. photo's are going to be a lot more useful for identification than some grainy video ... of course a combination of the two will be even better ..

Then you will also need suitable software .. try Google 'open source cctv recording' and see what comes up ..

NB. the eBay reference above is for a "digitizer" that allows a 'nromal' CCTV camera to be converted for USB i.e. it's not an actual camera) ..

PS With today's "blame the victim" culture (same mentality that allows the house breaker to sue you when he cuts himself climbing over your back wall ..), chances are YOU will end up in court charged with 'invasion of privacy' so some such .... so perhaps you might want to post your video's anonymously

You might be better off simply fitting a security light with movement sensor to scare them off ... (if it doesn't scare them, then it should at least provide enough light for the camera to operate by )
