security strobe light Questions
Road vehicle lighting regulations (UK)?
For a home security application, I require a white retro-reflector fitted to the front of my vehicle. The most convenient location is just behind the front grill.
I've read the vehicle lighting regulations 1989 and understand that a white reflector at the front is perfectly legal, but that a single reflector is not. It must be symmetrical. This means me putting a white reflector at each side of the grill. This worries me somewhat as to me it looks like it could be misconstrued as hidden strobe lights - they aren't They are in fact white reflectors as used on a bicycle wheel, thus they are E-coded
Does anyone "in the know" see a problem with this?
I appreciate your thoughts.
Are you worried it may be perceived as an unmarked policecar ---
this is the concern.
I'm not "in the know", but I can't see any problem. If it's likely to attract the attentions of the Constable of the Parish you will be able to show what they are and prove that they are not strobe lights.
Or are you worried your car will be mistaken for an unmarked police car...?
**EDIT**
I'm not sure why the concern. If all you're doing is fitting reflectors behind the grille you can demonstrate to anyone interested that this is all they are.
I'm guessing that the reason you want to fit reflectors is because your car is often left on an unlit street and you're concerned it's going to be hit by other traffic. If so, have you considered alternatives to fitting reflectors behind the grille? For example, you could simply put several lengths of reflective tape on the backs of the sun visors. All you'd have to do is to remember to flip them down when you leave the car. Alternatively, you could fit your bicycle reflectors to some other part of the front of the car so that they looked less like strobes, such as the lower part of the bumper.
Then again, I have found by experience that the front number plate is pretty good at reflecting the headlights of a car. Whatever you add to the front of your car really can't be much brighter than that.

security lights Questions
How to change security lights?
My husband and I bought a foreclosed home and need to replace the security lights on the house. However, this is a two story home with a basement and some of the lights are extremely far up. Probably 25+ feet. I'm not sure what type of contractor we should contact to change these.
Not sure wether you are in UK or U.S but any good electrician can do this, just tell him the job and to bring some big ladders!
This kind of job is average and every day for an electrician so dont worry about it, you wont need scaffold, he may bring a mate to foot the ladders. My sparky does it all the time solo and so do i. Yes it is legal and its on our own heads if we put the ladders up wrong and on unstable/uneaven ground (you get a lot of H&S smart arses (or asses if your U.S) on here giving their 2 pence (cents) worth!
Seriously its a walk in the park, dont worry and it wont cost you any extra. I often loan my triple extension ladders to mine and use the back of the van to foot the ladders so they dont slip when working on 3 storys or tie them off somewhere. Just common sense really and no dancing while you are up there!
He will probably bring a mate or an apprentice to give him a hand.
If they were installing them from new it would be a bit more of a pain but swapping them over probably means they can re-use some of the screw holes and just put a few new ones in for good measure so wont take that long either!
Good luck and im sure it will be a steady away job.
